Roseville's origins trace directly to the railroad. In 1864, the Central Pacific Railroad and California Central Railroad intersected at a point called Junction, which grew into the settlement of Roseville. The town was incorporated in April 1909. Between 1906 and 1908, the Southern Pacific Railroad relocated major terminal facilities from Rocklin to Roseville, fulfilling the vision of railroad engineer Theodore Judah and establishing the city as a significant operations center for the region's rail network.

The railroad's importance to Roseville's early economy was immense. By 1929, railroad jobs employed approximately 1,225 people out of a total city population of 6,425—nearly one fifth of the community. The industry built major facilities including the Pacific Fruit Express building, which in 1913 was the largest ice manufacturing plant in the world, used to refrigerate produce shipped across the country. However, post-World War II competition from the Interstate Highway System and commercial aviation gradually reduced railroad traffic, leading the industry to consolidate operations and eventually eliminate passenger service.

Roseville's railroad heritage shaped the city's early infrastructure and workforce, and the transition from rail-dependent to diversified economy mirrors household planning challenges: what sustained a family at one stage of life sometimes requires adjustment as circumstances change. Term life insurance operates the same way—your coverage amount should reflect your dependents' current needs and timeline, then adjust as those needs evolve.
